dc.description The library can be an important center of community for Latino immigrants. This webinar helps participants maximize the potential of their library to connect with and provide services for Spanish-speaking patrons. Instructor Loida Garcia-Febo, coordinator, New Americans Program at Queens (N.Y.) Library, presents tips about blending emerging technologies and social media with in-person services such as programming and reference in order to build a library community that welcomes and assists Spanish speakers. She also provides successful service examples from libraries in the U.S., Mexico, Colombia, and other countries. This archived webinar was originally presented October 26, 2011. A recipient of the 2010 ALA Elizabeth Futas Catalyst for Change Award, Loida speaks nationally and internationally about human rights, access to information, advocacy, services to diverse populations, and new professionals. Loida has been named a Mover & Shaker by Library Journal and has served as president of REFORMA 2009–2010 and as chair of the ALA Intellectual Freedom Round Table 2010–2011. Currently, she is an ALA councilor-at-large, chair of the ALA Membership Meetings Committee, past-secretary of IFLA’s Free Access to Information and Freedom of Expression Committee and a member of the IFLA Continuing Professional Development and Workplace Learning Standing Committee. Loida also co-established and still advises IFLA’s New Professionals SIG. Her writing focuses on new librarians, new professionals, multi-ethnic populations, Latinos, and other diverse populations. en_US
