ALAWON: American Library Association Washington Office Newsline Volume 9, Number 12 February 17, 2000 In this issue: ESEA Senate Markup Moved to March 1; Action Still Needed Senate staff and organizations interested in ESEA reauthorization have been continuing a variety of meetings on strategy and proposals for amendments to a large committee draft bill (see also the February 11 ALAWON at http://www.ala.org/washoff/alawon/alwn9011.html). It appears that the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee will mark-up the draft legislation on Wednesday, March 1. It is Sen. Jack Reed's (D-RI) intention to submit an amendment at the mark- up, which would be the text of S. 1262, the Elementary and Secondary School Library Media Resources, Training and Advanced Technology Assistance Act. ACTION NEEDED: School library supporters should call, write, and visit local offices of the members of the HELP Committee asking for their support in including S. 1262 in the final draft bill. (The Senate Switchboard phone number is: 202-224-3121.) If your Senator is not on the Committee but is a sponsor of the bill, like Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS), please contact his or her office and ask for help. (Use the ALA Legislative Action Center (http://congress.ala.org), but be sure to send a paper copy of your letter as well.) If you have any questions, or if you want to share feedback from your congressional office, please contact Mary Costabile, associate director for ALA's Office of Government Relations, at 800-941-8478 or mcostabile@alawash.org. -- Mary Costabile Members of the Senate HELP Committee and/or sponsors of S. 1262 are as follows: St-Pty Senator Phone Fax (202 Area Code) AL R Jeff Sessions 224-4124 224-3149 AR R Tim Hutchinson 224-2353 228-3973 AR D Blanche Lincoln* 224-4843 228-1371 CT D Christopher J.
