ALAWON: American Library Association Washington Office Newsline Volume 11, Number 27 April 8, 2002 In This Issue: [1] Memo on Removal or Destruction of Federal Depository Library Documents Released [2] New Public Printer Nominated [1] Memo on Removal or Destruction of Federal Depository Library Documents Released On March 21st, the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) released a memo, prepared by Thomas Susman of Ropes & Gray, that responds to questions raised by a number of ARL directors. It addresses important questions concerning the removal and/or destruction of federal depository library documents, including factors that libraries might consider concerning public access to copies of withdrawn FDLP materials. The memo reviews the legal responsibilities of both the federal depository libraries and the Government Printing Office while highlighting a number of key policy considerations. Although we are also witnessing the removal of information from a number of state agencies, this memo only addresses these issues at the federal level. The Memo is at http://www.arl.org/info/frn/gov/Susman.html [2] New Public Printer Nominated On Friday, March 29th, the President announced his intention to nominate Bruce R.
