CC:DA/MAGERT/2001/3 Revision re: Rule 3.5B4

Abstract

During the preparation of the clean version of AACR2 Chapter 3 it was noted that the last example following the second paragraph of rule 3.5B4 used the SMD of map section, which needed to be changed to the new SMD section. This example does not seem exemplary of the rule and the rule does not reflect cataloging practice. While similar rules exist in four other chapters (6.5B3, 7.5B3, 9.5B2, and 11.5B2) none make a distinction between “physically separate” and “not physically separate” parts. The cartographic community is therefore requesting this distinction be eliminated and that the rule be simplified to reflect more accurate terminology relative to cartographic materials.
