    Report of the Prejudicial Materials Working Group: RBMS Controlled Vocabularies Editorial Group, June 2024

    The Prejudicial Materials Working Group (PMWG) of the RBMS Controlled Vocabularies Editorial Group (CVEG) was convened in the summer of 2020 to review, revise, and generate new terminology in the RBMS Controlled Vocabulary for Rare Materials Cataloging (RBMS CVRMC) that would be useful for indexing works that are prejudicial in nature, or that are the byproduct of prejudicial and hateful systems and ideologies. This work included review and revision of scope notes and relationships between terms. By developing terminology to characterize prejudice targeted toward particular communities, we hoped to enable the study of particular strains of oppression. We hoped that with application, these terms could facilitate research on the history of oppression and the essential role printing and publishing have played in establishing and maintaining oppressive structures and practices. We also recognized that this work would help to ensure that catalogers and the act of cataloging are not contributing to or masking harm by failing to surface the essential nature of library resources.

    At the 2015 ALA Annual Conference and Exhibition, the RBMS Controlled Vocabularies Editorial Group charged a working group to investigate and recommend a solution for publication of the RBMS Controlled Vocabularies as Linked Open Data This document summarizes the findings of the working group (Amber Billey, Allison Jai O’Dell, and Amy Brown, in consultation with Jason Kovari), and presents a solution for management and publication of library thesauri as Linked Open Data, within the context of a collaborative and dynamic editorial workflow.

    The Rare Books and Manuscripts Section Controlled Vocabulary for Rare Materials Cataloging (RBMS CVRMC) is a controlled vocabulary that provides terminology designed to facilitate access to special collections resources, especially rare books and manuscripts. Its content is maintained by the Controlled Vocabularies Editorial Group (CVEG), a committee of the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section (RBMS) of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), a division of the American Libraries Association (ALA). The RBMS CVRMC is made available online via the Library of Congress Linked Data Service (LC LDS) at id.loc.gov/vocabulary/rbmscv.html.
