Item Open Access Assessment Outside of the Box: The Need for Focused Study of Information Seekers in a Changing Environment(Association of College & Research Libraries, 1999) Burke, John; Harmony, StephenaItem Open Access Automated Storage and Retrieval-The Next Generation(Association of College & Research Libraries, 1999) Kirsch, Sarah ElizabethThe first automated storage and retrieval system combined with an online catalog was heralded as a pilot project when it was introduced in 1990 at California State University at Northridge (CSUN). Librarians across the country were watching to see whether the system would succeed or fail. The automated storage and retrieval system's integration of industrial technology and an online catalog appeared to be an excellent solution to many libraries storage problems. Since the CSUN installation, there has been little discussion in the library literature either about the exciting possibilities of automated storage and retrieval systems or the possible drawbacks of such systems. Despite the possible drawbacks, many libraries are installing automated storage and retrieval systems to meet their storage needs.Item Open Access Bringing LOGIC to Local Government Information: A Multi-type Partnership to Organize Local Government Information(Association of College & Research Libraries, 1999) Horn, Judy K.; Leung, Shirley W.Would you like to develop closer partnerships and working relations with public libraries or other jurisdictions in your area? Have you ever wished that there were more efficient methods of collecting, organizing, providing access to and archiving local government information from the cities in your jurisdiction? This paper presents a description of a multi-type partnership of libraries, local jurisdictions, and community organizations working together to develop a method for enhancing the community's access to full-text electronic local government information.Item Open Access Building a Campus Presence One Page at a Time: Web Strategies for the Small College Library(Association of College & Research Libraries, 1999) Dewald, Nancy H.Item Open Access Changing Collaborations to Deliver Information in New Ways: Lessons Learned in the Illinois Digital Library Initiative Project(Association of College & Research Libraries, 1999) Cole, Timothy; Mischo, WilliamItem Open Access The Changing Nature of Work in Academic Libraries(Association of College & Research Libraries, 1999) Smith, Kimberley Robles; Lynch, Beverly P.Item Open Access The Classroom vs. the Web: Comparing Two Ways to Teach Web-based Resources(Association of College & Research Libraries, 1999) Burns, ElizabethThe Classroom vs. the Web is a presentation of research-in-progress of two methods to teach competency with web-based resources. The study was carried out at the Mansfield Campus of the Ohio State University during the Autumn, 1998, and Winter, 1999, quarters. The Ohio State University and OhioLINK recently converted access to their resources from VT100 terminal emulation to web-based interfaces. A one credit hour, bibliographic instruction course was created to teach the required skills in the new web environment. Students divided themselves into two groups. One group attended the weekly one-hour lab class with the instructors; the other used a webbased instructional program. Each population was given identical content and projects. At the beginning of the quarter, a pre-test was administered. At the end of the quarter, a post-test was administered and the results compared. Comments from the students on each method were also studied. The study was continued with a second set of students during the Winter Quarter.Item Open Access Common Cause: Creating a Unified Environmental Information System through Stakeholder Partnership(Association of College & Research Libraries, 1999) Langschied, LindaItem Open Access Core Journal Titles in Full Text Databases(Association of College & Research Libraries, 1999) Carr, Jo Ann; Wolfe, AmyThis paper describes a study initiated by the authors for a report to the Collection Development Committee of the Council of University of Wisconsin Libraries. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the content of four full text journal databases by identifying the coverage of core journals in specific disciplines. The databases studied were: Academic Search Full Text from Ebscohost; Expanded Academic ASAP from IAC; Periodical Abstracts Research II Full Text from ProQuest; and Wilson Select Full Text.Item Open Access Creating Our Roles as Reference Librarians of the Future: Choice or Fate?(Association of College & Research Libraries, 1999) Palmer, Susan SzaszItem Open Access Cry Me a River: Searching for Revenue Streams in Academic Libraries(Association of College & Research Libraries, 1999) Dobb, LindaItem Open Access Designing for WOW!: The Optimal Information Gateway(Association of College & Research Libraries, 1999) Koltay, Zsuzsa; Calhoun, KarenIncreasing reliance on electronic systems for access to resources and services is a fact of life in today's libraries. Users have grown to expect reliable, powerful and intuitive systems that do it all. The Web has raised library users' expectations for simplicity of use. At the same time the emphasis on customer service in academia has produced an atmosphere in which it is essential to adapt quickly to the changing needs of faculty and students. In this fast-paced, technology and customerdriven environment, the library as a slow-moving, stable institution is a thing of the past. To continue to succeed, academic libraries must transform themselves into high-performance organizations committed to delighting their users. This can only be accomplished if we have an accurate understanding of what the users need and want. This paper presents the results of a focus group study that was conducted to find out just that.Item Open Access Developing and Maintaining Instructional Web Sites: The Library Starter Kit(Association of College & Research Libraries, 1999) Murphy, Deborah A.Item Open Access Directly to the Source: Will Academic Libraries Become Wholesalers of Information?(Association of College & Research Libraries, 1999) Anderson, ScottItem Open Access E-Reserves: Home Grown vs. Turnkey(Association of College & Research Libraries, 1999) Nackerud, ShaneObvious reasons for implementing e-reserves abound, the most compelling of which is better access to reserve readings for students on campus and off. The question then is not whether your library is going to begin making e-reserves available, but how are you going to do it? One decision which must be made before any work can begin is will your library use a home grown system to deliver and maintain e-reserves, or will your library use a turnkey system such as Eres, Contec, or Nousoft? This paper will focus on the decisions and pilot projects at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, and the University of Minnesota concerning this question and e-reserves implementation.Item Open Access EDI-Slow Walk to Fast Forward(Association of College & Research Libraries, 1999) Stephens, Joan; Presley, RogerItem Open Access Expansion of Electronic Resources: Superhighway to Campus Visibility(Association of College & Research Libraries, 1999) Davis, Francie C.In an effort to provide easier access to databases, to expand resources to full-text, and to reduce the time-consuming process of updating loose-leaf paper subscriptions. Dowling College Library recently underwent a major transformation in its delivery of electronic information to its customers. The library went from DOS to Windows and online access, from CD-ROM to Internet delivery, from single stand-alone units to networked CD-ROMs, and from paper to a networked digital format. The disruptive transition required a total re-thinking of the delivery of information literacy to the library's customers, a serious look at library relationships, and a greater emphasis on communication, planning and training. In addition, the success of the project seriously improved the view of the role of librarians on campus by providing cutting-edge technology campus-wide.Item Open Access Extinguishing Slow Fires: Cooperative Preservation Efforts(Association of College & Research Libraries, 1999) Baird, Brian J.; Schaffner, Bradley L.Item Open Access Factors That Influence Online Database Use(Association of College & Research Libraries, 1999) Tenopir, CarolItem Open Access Faculty Use of Electronic Journals at Research Institutions(Association of College & Research Libraries, 1999) Lenares, Deborah
