Item Open Access 6JSC/ALA/17 - Machine-Actionable Elements in RDA Chapter 3: Discussion Paper [and responses](RDA Steering Committee, 2012-10-05) Attig, John; Kevin, Marsh; Bill, Leonard; Gordon, Dunsire; Alan, DanskinBased in part on posts to RDA-L, ALA’s Committee on Cataloging: Description and Access voted to create a Task Force on Machine-Actionable Data Elements in RDA Chapter 3. The Task Force was charged to evaluate the structure of data elements in Chapter 3 that contain quantitative information. The Task Force was chaired by Peter Rolla; members included Diane Hillmann, Randy Roeder, Paul Weiss, and Kathy Winzer, John Attig (ex officio), Gordon Dunsire (consultant); Karen Coyle participated in most of the discussions. After studying the elements for Extent and Dimensions, the Task Force came up with the Aspect–Unit–Quantity model that is described in this paper. The implementation of this model in the RDA element set, not to mention the text of the RDA instructions, would have a significant impact on RDA, and this impact would not be limited to Chapter 3 or to elements containing quantitative information. Therefore, before presenting a formal revision, ALA would like to submit the attached Discussion Paper, and would like to ask for the advice of the JSC on a number of issues.Item Open Access 6JSC/ALA/Discussion/1 - Machine-Actionable Data Elements in RDA: Discussion Paper (2013) [and responses](RDA Steering Committee, 2013-10-04) Glennan, Kathy; Leser, Dave; Marsh, Kevin; Dunsire, Gordon; Danskin, Alan; Leonard, Bill; Frodl, ChristineIn 2012, ALA submitted a discussion paper to the JSC (6JSC/ALA/17, Machine-Actionable Data Elements in RDA Chapter 3: Discussion Paper [2012]) developed by the Task Force on Machine-Actionable Data Elements in RDA Chapter 3. In general, the JSC and its constituent bodies agreed that the issues raised in the discussion paper were worth further exploration, and offered some comments and concerns. ALA agreed to continue to work on the concept of adding structured, machine-actionable definitions for the Extent and Dimensions elements and to investigate developing a proposal to add Extent of Expression to the RDA element set. To carry out this effort, ALA reconstituted its Task Force on Machine-Actionable Data: Francis Lapka (chair), John Attig, Dominique Bourassa, Anne Champagne, Karen Coyle, Gordon Dunsire, Diane Hillmann, Peter Rolla, Mark Scharff, and Amanda Sprochi. After reviewing the responses to 6JSC/ALA/17 and studying the FRBR concept of element of expression, the Task Force created an interim report and presented it to ALA’s Committee on Cataloging: Description and Access at ALA Annual 2013. This discussion paper describes the work of the Task Force during the past year, and proposes a number of questions for JSC comment and discussion.Item Open Access 6JSC/ALA/Discussion/5 - Machine-Actionable Data Elements for Measurements, Extent of the Carrier, Pagination and Foliation, Dimensions, Extent of the Content, and Duration – Discussion Paper (2015) [and responses](RDA Steering Committee, 2015-10-05) Glennan, Kathy; Kartus, Ebe; Leonard, Bill; Oehlschlager, Susanne; Reser, Dave; Danskin, AlanIn looking toward a future of linked data, RDA instructions should be revised and expanded to accommodate more machine-actionable data elements.
