Each college’s model reflects institutional cultures but shares certain philosophical assumptions. This presentation will provide case studies of the development of these models and will explore the benefits of such models as well as the practical challenges.Item Open Access The Communication Center: A Full-Service Academic Resource in the Heart of the Library(Association of College & Research Libraries, 2001) Tyler, Jill I.; Hook, Sheril J.Item Open Access Creating Partnerships in Support of Students' Scholarship: The Electronic Theses and Dissertations Project at the University of Iowa(Association of College & Research Libraries, 2001) Simmons-Welburn, Janice; Soderdahl, Paul; Welburn, WilliamItem Open Access Crossing to Web-based Instruction: The Importance of Instructional Assessment(Association of College & Research Libraries, 2001) Roselle, Ann; Fenske, RachelAcademic librarians have for some time used computer-assisted instruction for teaching basic information literacy skills at the undergraduate level. Now, experimentation with Web-based instruction is becoming increasingly popular. The importance of evaluating the success of information literacy instruction, regardless of the delivery method, is of great value to academic instruction librarians. One of the challenges of maintaining this value is how to continue evaluating information literacy instruction that uses Web-based tutorials. This paper examines the effectiveness of a Web-based information literacy tutorial in a computer literacy course at Eastern Washington University (EWU).Item Open Access Deconstructing the At-Risk Student Phenomenon: Can Librarian Values Salvage Education for the 21st Century?(Association of College & Research Libraries, 2001) Agada, JohnItem Open Access Digital Collections: Acceptance and Use in a Research Community(Association of College & Research Libraries, 2001) Hurd, Julie M.This paper describes a project designed to capture evidence of changing approaches to identifying, locating, organizing, and producing scientific information in a university-based research community. Faculty in the basic and health sciences were interviewed regarding their uses of electronic journals, databases, and other digital resources to support their teaching and research activities. The findings are intended to provide a better understanding of scientists’ use of digital collections for librarians who acquire and manage research collections and who develop services to faculty and students, especially those in pure and applied sciences. This knowledge should lead to better informed acquisition decisions and improved library services. The changing behavior patterns documented suggest emerging models of scientific communication as scientists begin to incorporate use of digital collections and information technology in innovative ways.Item Open Access Digital Librarian, Cybrarian, or Librarian with Specialized Skills: Who Will Staff Digital Libraries?(Association of College & Research Libraries, 2001) Marion, LindaThis exploratory study examined 250 online academic librarian employment ads posted during 2000 to determine current requirements for technologically oriented jobs. A content analysis software program was used to categorize the specific skills and characteristics listed in the ads. The results were analyzed using multivariate analysis (cluster analysis and multidimensional scaling). The results, displayed in a three-dimensional concept map, indicate 19 categories comprised of both computer related skills and behavioral characteristics that can be interpreted along three continua: (1) technical skills to people skills; (2) long-established technologies and behaviors to emerging trends; (3) technical service competencies to public service competencies. There was no identifiable “digital librarian” category.Item Open Access Distance Education, Web-Resources Design, and Compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act(Association of College & Research Libraries, 2001) Schmetzke, AxelItem Open Access The Entrepreneurial Library: Creating Revenue in the Age of E-Commerce(Association of College & Research Libraries, 2001) Kirk, Elizabeth E.Item Open Access From BI to IL: The Paths of Two Liberal Arts Colleges(Association of College & Research Libraries, 2001) Fister, Barbara; Hutchins, Elizabeth O.; MacPherson, Kris (Huber)Two liberal arts colleges in Minnesota are transforming strong, longstanding bibliographic instruction programs into dynamic information literacy programs involving extensive cross-campus collaboration. This paper outlines their strategies and the lessons learned thus far.
