In part 1 of AACR2 (1.0E) the descriptive elements are transcribed wherever practicable in the script in which it appears in the item itself. But in part 2 headings are always given in romanized form. The following proposed changes would allow vernacular headings as optional additional access points.Item Open Access CC:DA/MARBI Rep/1999/1 Report of the MARBI Representative to CC:DA Midwinter 1999(1999-01-27) Watson, MarkItem Open Access CC:DA/LC/1999/2 Library of Congress Report to ALCTS/CCS/CC:DA, ALA Annual Conference, June 1999(1999-06) Tillett, Barbara B.Item Open Access CC:DA/MARBI Rep/1999/2 Report of the MARBI Representative to CC:DA Annual 1999(1999-06-24) Watson, MarkItem Open Access CC:DA/LC/2000/1 Library of Congress Liaison Report to ALA/ALCTS/CCS/CC:DA, Midwinter Meeting, January 2000(2000-01) Tillett, Barbara B.Item Open Access CC:DA/MAGERT/1999/1rev. In addition to reviewing the text of Cartographic Materials for consistency with the 1988 revision of AACR2 as well as subsequent updates, the committee incorporated additional rules to accommodate information prescribed by the U.S. Federal Geographic Data Committee’s Content Standards for Digital Geospatial Metadata. An international subcommittee was formed to look at the cataloging for cartographic electronic resources; their recommendations have been incorporated as part of this document. The suggested rule changes and new rules (see CC:DA/MAGERT/1999/1rev.) are the result of the committee’s work to either incorporate new data or to clarify the existing text to reflect actual cataloging practice of all five countries.Item Open Access CC:DA/Hostage/1 Use of full stops with metric unit symbols in AACR2(2000-05-10) Hostage, JohnAACR2 treats unit symbols in the metric system as if they were abbreviations, i.e. it consistently puts a full stop after “cm”, “mm”, etc. However, these unit symbols are meant to be just that – symbols, independent of any language, just as the raised circle is a symbol for degrees or $ is a symbol for dollars. In the interest of the internationalization of AACR2, unnecessary full stops should be eliminated from the text and the examples. This proposal lists all places where metric units are used in AACR2.Item Open Access CC:DA/LC/2000/2 Library of Congress Liaison Report to ALA/ALCTS/CCS/CC:DA, Annual Meeting, July 2000(2000-06) Tillett, Barbara B.Item Open Access CC:DA/Attig/2000/1 Revisions to Chapter 9 of AACR2(2000-06-28) Attig, JohnNext week CC:DA will have on its agenda the revisions to Chapter 9, as further revised by the Joint Steering Committee and with additional suggestions by the Library of Congress. Some of these suggestions are rather significant, and may require extensive discussion. In order to do some preliminary work, members of the old Task Force on the Harmonization of ISBD(ER) and AACR — and Adam Schiff, who was not a member of the Task Force, but whom we adopted — have been discussing some of these issues. What follows is a discussion paper, with (in some cases) specific rule revision proposals. The issues covered are: A. Harmonization B. Area 3 C. Area 5 D. Resource identifiers E. Mode of access notes In some cases, there was consensus among those involved in the discussion; in other cases, there were different points of view — which are reflected below. We offer these ideas in the hope that they will prove useful in CC:DA’s deliberations on Chapter 9 in Chicago.Item Open Access CC:DA/Attig/2000/2 Chapter 9 and Chapter 12 revisions: some comments(2000-06-30) Attig, JohnHaving served on both the CC:DA Task Force that prepared the revisions to Chapter 9 and the CONSER Task Force that worked with Jean Hirons on the Chapter 12 revisions, I knew that the two sets of revisions overlap in scope. I was concerned that it would be necessary to compare the two sets of revisions and resolve some contradictions. I offer the following comments as a contribution to CC:DA’s deliberations. Most of the differences I found were just differences, not conflicts. What remains are some rules that may not be compatible when applied to the same resources. I offer my own thoughts, which are usually questions, not recommendations. The basis for my comparison is the rule revision proposal for Chapter 12 and the ALA revision proposals for Chapter 9 as modified by JSC decisions.Item Open Access CC:DA/Agenbroad/2 Nonroman Headings and References Proposal: An Alternative(2000-06-30) Agenbroad, James E.When CC:DA considers my proposal (CC:DA/Agenbroad/1) and if it decides that AACR2 should say something about making nonroman access points it might want to consider the following as an alternative to the text I proposed. This has the virtue of adding one new rule, 20.5, rather than adding six.
