ALAWON: American Library Association Washington Office Newsline Volume 10, Number 80 November 7, 2001 In this issue: [1] SENATOR REED AND ADVOCACY A PERSONAL ANECDOTE ABOUT ADVOCACY! Emily Sheketoff went to a fundraiser for Senator Jack Reed November 7, 2001. In his remarks to the group, Senator Reed told a story about the satisfaction this job gives him. He was in Cranston, Rhode Island, at an Eagle Scout Honors event. After the honoree finished playing the piano, a woman approached him and said, "Are you Senator Reed?" He puffed up a little and said, "yes I am." She said that she was the honoree's aunt from Seattle, Washington and very excited to meet him. Senator Reed thought, "Wow, people in Washington state know who I am!" He asked her why she was so excited to meet him and she replied, "I'm a school library media specialist and you're our hero." He told the group he was so flattered that someone outside of Rhode Island had even heard of him, but he was very pleased when she told him how school librarians everywhere appreciated what he was doing for school libraries. Thanks to library supporters for spreading the word about issues and "heros" of importance in the library world. Keep up the good work. ****** ALAWON (ISSN 1069-7799) is a free, irregular publication of the American Library Association Washington Office.
