ALAWON: American Library Association Washington Office Newsline Volume 10, Number 79 November 1, 2001 In this issue: LEGISLATIVE BRANCH CONFERENCE REPORT CLEARS HOUSE On November 1, the House considered H. Report 107-259, the FY2002 Legislative Branch conference report and approved its passage by a vote of 374 – 52. The Legislative Branch Appropriations bill (H.R. 2647) includes funding for each House of Congress, the Architect of the Capitol, the Library of Congress, the Government Printing Office and the General Accounting Office. The conference report in many cases chose the higher House numbers instead of lower Senate numbers. For example, in the Government Printing Office account, the Office of the Superintendent of Documents received $29,639,000 million, instead of the $28,728,000 suggested by the Senate. The Library of Congress would receive $452 million, with $81 million included for the Congressional Research Service. Today, the Senate considered the Labor HHS Education Appropriations bill S. 1536. Despite dislocation of Congressional staff and Senators and Representatives, conferees have met on various bills for the last two weeks. The current continuing resolution to keep government open, H. J. Res. 70, extends through November 16, and Senator Stevens (R-AK) said he hoped the appropriations bills would all be completed before the Thanksgiving recess. ****** ALAWON (ISSN 1069-7799) is a free, irregular publication of the American Library Association Washington Office.
