Mr. McDonald has been serving as acting head of the SLD until the search was completed, and has served as Director of Operations of SLD since the establishment of USAC in 1998 and, prior to that, with the Schools and Libraries Corporation. In his new position, Mr. McDonald will manage all aspects of the $2.25 billion universal service support mechanism for schools and libraries, commonly known as the E-rate. Prior to coming to USAC, Mr. McDonald had a very successful career with the Federal Government and prior to joining USAC was Deputy Director of the Office of Budget and Program Performance for the Department of Transportation. Cheryl Parrino, USAC CEO, noted that "our national search provided us with a number of qualified candidates, but, in the end, the best was in our own backyard. [McDonald] is very well respected by key stakeholders and brings a wealth of experience as well as a proven track record of success with the program." [2] Senate Confirms Bruce Cole as NEH Chairman Last Friday, the Senate confirmed Bruce Cole as chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Staff said that the Senators were particularly intent on conducting normal business as well as responding to the tragedies of last Tuesday. Mr. Cole, who is teaching this term at Indiana University, plans to take up his duties at NEH in December. A specific date for the swearing in has not been selected. ****** ALAWON (ISSN 1069-7799) is a free, irregular publication of the American Library Association Washington Office.
