ALAWON: American Library Association Washington Office Newsline Volume 10, Number 58 July 23, 2001 In this issue: Legislative Branch Appropriations On July 19, the Senate passed S. 1172, its version of appropriations for the Legislative Branch for FY 2002. The House intends to vote on its bill in committee on July 26. The Senate bill recommends an allocation of $443 million for the Library of Congress and the Congressional Research Service. While this is a decrease below the level of FY2001, the decrease is attributable to last year's one-time appropriation for the Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation project. In addition, a significant increase is provided for the National Digital Library within the Library of Congress. For the Government Printing Office, a total of $110 million is recommended, of which $81 million is allocated for Congressional printing and binding. The Office of Superintendent of Documents would be allocated $28.7 million. The Senate report (S. Rept. 107-41), states that needed funds for replacement of the GPO air-conditioning and lighting improvements are included in the FY2001 supplemental appropriations bill which passed both Houses on July 20. Sen. Durbin (D-Il) said about Legislative Branch Appropriations, "The support agencies under this subcommittee perform critical functions enabling Congress to operate effectively. We have sought to provide adequate funding levels for these agencies-- particularly the Library of Congress, the General Accounting Office, the Capitol Police, and the Congressional Budget Office." ****** ALAWON (ISSN 1069-7799) is a free, irregular publication of the American Library Association Washington Office.
