ALAWON: American Library Association Washington Office Newsline Volume 10, Number 46 May 30, 2001 In this issue: Save the Date! The ALA Washington Office Offers Two UCITA Training Sessions at Annual Conference Despite our success in containing UCITA this year, we are still anticipating a renewed effort in the coming year. UCITA could return to states that saw earlier discussion of the problematic bill this year as well as to the states where there was no action at all. If you have not attended any UCITA trainings, now is the time! Two workshops will be offered again at Annual on Sunday, June 17, 2001. Advance registration for the workshops is requested. UCITA 101 TIME: 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. Moscone : Room 125 If all you know is how to spell UCITA, the ALA Washington Office is offering a beginners' workshop. What do those letters stand for and what do they mean for libraries? Why is everyone so concerned? Learn what the fuss is all about and the interesting new challenges UCITA offers to library advocates. To reserve your space for UCITA 101: e-mail pkaplan@alawash.org UCITA ADVANCED ADVOCACY TRAINING TIME: 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. Moscone : Room 125 You've memorized the bill and know what it means for libraries. Now, what do you do? Find out from people who have been in the UCITA trenches. Librarians, joined by our coalition partners in business and industry, will discuss how to oppose UCITA. What are the advantages and disadvantages of working in a coalition? How do you identify business partners for your state's coalition? What do you say to the lobbyist who calls librarians pirates or to the legislator who insists UCITA will promote e-commerce? There will be plenty of time for audience interaction with our panel of seasoned UCITA veterans. Reservations are requested.
