ALAWON: American Library Association Washington Office Newsline Volume 10, Number 31 April 12, 2001 In this issue: Mark Your Calendars! Copyright Program at Annual 2001 We want you, loyal ALAWON readers, to be the first to hear about an exciting and provocative copyright program scheduled for Saturday, June 16th at San Francisco Annual 2001. "I Want My MP3! Sharing and Ownership in the Digital Age" will explore how peer-to-peer networking, Napster, and related court cases may affect future library services. Could "Docster" be on the horizon? We have pulled together an incredible panel of librarians, public policy analysts, academics, and lobbyists to discuss the challenges peer-to-peer networks and other emerging technologies present to libraries. Confirmed speakers include: Manus Cooney, Vice President, Corporate and Public Policy Development, Napster, and former legislative counsel to Senator Orrin Hatch, Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Adam Eisgrau, Attorney, The Wexler Group, lobbyist to the Digital Media Association (DiMA) and former legislative counsel to the American Library Association. Siva Vaidyhanathan, Assistant Professor of Communications and Culture, New York University and author of Copyrights and Copywrongs: The Rise of Intellectual Property and How It Threatens Creativity. Howard Besser, Associate Professor, UCLA School of Education and Information Studies and frequent speaker on copyright, the public domain, distance learning, and information technology. Our panel moderator is Chris Arnold of National Public Radio. Arnold's most recent work has focused on Napster and peer-to-peer technologies. We anticipate that this program will be packed and highly interactive, so be sure to get to the program early and grab a seat. When: Saturday, June 16th 2-4 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel (room to be announced in a future ALAWON). The program is co-sponsored by the OITP Copyright Advisory Committee and ACRL's Copyright Committee.
