Janet La Rue of the Family Research Council (http://www.frc.org) will represent the pro- filtering contingent. Library supporters in the NHPR listening area are encouraged to call in to "The Exchange" and express your opinions regarding federally mandated filtering in libraries. BUDGET CLARIFICATION There seems to be some confusion about the IMLS FY2002 budget from President Bush. The LSTA budget request is essentially flat funding. . . the state grants went up from $148,939,000 to $149,014,000. The Native American Library Services went from $2,940,000 to $2,941,000. But the National Leadership Grants lost $39 million, going from $50,550,000 to $11,081,000. This removes the $39 million given last year for "discretionary grants" which are pet Congressional projects. The Office of Museum Services budget was flat funding as well, increasing from $24,852,000 to $24,899,000. WHILE MEMBERS OF CONGRESS ARE HOME Members of the House of Representatives and the Senate are in their home districts for the Passover-Easter Holidays. Please take this opportunity to call them or try to see them and let them know how important library funding is. We need support for the Reed-Cochran bill which would have a separate line item for school library materials. There is a good possibility that it could become part of the Elementary and Secondary Education Reauthorization which will be debated on the Senate floor beginning April 23. Republican Senators need to tell their leadership that this is important to them. School libraries need a steady source of funding. School library collections are in dismal condition and they need our help now! ****** ALAWON (ISSN 1069-7799) is a free, irregular publication of the American Library Association Washington Office.
