ALAWON: American Library Association Washington Office Newsline Volume 14, Number 125 December 16, 2005 In This Issue: PATRIOT Update-- Cloture Delayed An enormous push of grassroots activity in the past weeks has contributed to the success today in holding off a vote for cloture that would have ended debate on PATRIOT Reauthorization. The "no" vote on cloture means that debate will continue on PATRIOT Act reauthorization. Majority Leader Frist (R-TN) blocked a proposed 3-month extension of the expiring PATRIOT provisions that would have allowed a more informed debate and further real improvement to the PATRIOT Act. Further, because Sen. Frist changed his vote on cloture at the last minute from Yea to Nay, he can invoke cloture at any time once he has 60 votes. So if Frist can convince 60 Senators to join him, he can cut off the debate at any time. Because of this possibility it is important to continue to monitor updates, organize your grassroots participants, and encourage your Senators to keep urging real improvements on this vital legislation. Below is a list of Senators who voted "Nay" on the on the motion to invoke cloture. Please call them and THANK them for their support of libraries and privacy.
