ALAWON: American Library Association Washington Office Newsline Volume 13, Number 107 December 29, 2004 In This Issue: Early Reading First Program Applications Available Early Reading First Program Applications Available On December 23, the Department of Education published a notice inviting applicants for new FY 2005 awards for the Early Reading First Program. This program supports local efforts to enhance the oral language, cognitive, and early reading skills of preschool-age children especially those from low-income families, through strategies, materials, and professional development that are grounded in scientifically based reading research. Those eligible for grants from the program are local educational agencies (LEAs), public or private organizations or agencies (including libraries) located in a community served by an eligible LEA, and LEAs applying in collaboration with eligible organizations or agencies (including libraries). The Department of Education estimates that $104,160,000 in grants will be made available through the Early Reading First Program in FY05. The rewards will range from $750,000 to $4,500,000, with $2,800,000 being estimated as the average amount to be granted. Pre- and full applications to the program were made available on December 28. The deadline for pre-applications is February 7, 2005. The deadline for full application is May 2, 2005 (for applicants invited to submit full applications only).
