The ALA Washington office is pleased to announce that Carol Ashworth began her duties as UCITA Grassroots Coordinator on September 25, 2000. Carol will be our key contact person for UCITA in the Washington office. She will organize our communication efforts with state grassroots legislative efforts, prepare training and informational materials, provide workshop training with other ALA Washington Office staff and work with a coalition of businesses and associations that ALA helped to organize to fight UCITA. As of September 29, 2000, the Washington Office will have updated and redesigned web pages devoted to UCITA: http://www.ala.org/washoff/ucita/index.html. These pages provide background on UCITA, address its impact on libraries, outline key information for grassroots efforts at the state level and provide key resources and a calendar of events. We will be continuing to update these pages and welcome any suggestions you have for improving them. [3] UCITA workshop will be presented in post-conference at fall NELA conference The New England Library Association will be offering a UCITA workshop on October 4 at its regional conference. Miriam Nisbet, Legislative Counsel, and Lynne Bradley, Government Relations Director, will be discussing key UCITA issues. The goal is to educate participants and prepare them to mobilize their library communities and form necessary coalitions with other groups if UCITA becomes active in their states. Other October workshops that the Washington Office staff will conduct are for the Southeast Library Association on October 11 (Lynne Bradley and Carrie Russell, Copyright Specialist) and the COSLA Annual Meeting on October 22 (Lynne and Carrie). [4] UCITA Satellite Teleconference will offer nationwide training: This is a reminder that ALA, along with the Association of Research Libraries, American Association of Law Libraries, Medical Library Association and Special Libraries Association, is sponsoring a teleconference on UCITA on December 13, 2000 from 1-4 p.m.(EST). The teleconference, "UCITA: A Guide to Understanding and Action," will feature a panel of experts who will discuss strategies for addressing UCITA at the state level and will answer questions posed by viewers from across the country. See http://www.arl.org/ucita.html for details on registering for the conference. Registration is $350 (before November 1st) for 1-3 satellite downlinks.
