ALAWON: American Library Association Washington Office Newsline Volume 9, Number 69 August 29, 2000 In this issue: Results of WO Communications/Publications Survey Our thanks to all who completed the Washington Office Communications/Publications survey. We value your opinions and appreciate your help as we work to provide you with the best news and information regarding the federal legislative and policy issues that affect libraries. We have compiled the survey results and are already implementing several of your ideas. Effective immediately, we will make the following changes to ALAWON: ? When an ALAWON asks for members to contact their Representatives, the text of the ALAWON e-mail will now also include a direct link to the Legislative Action Center, where members can look up the names and addresses of their representatives and send personalized e-mails on current library issues. ? When an ALAWON provides an update of an ongoing Washington Office issue, we will (wherever possible) provide a direct link to a Washington Office Issue Brief that describes the subject in detail. In addition to these changes, we are also instituting a trial system that we hope will assist you in managing your ALAWON subscription. During the next nine months, the subject lines of ALAWON will include a system of abbreviations that will indicate what the ALAWON is about and whether the ALAWON e-mail calls for immediate action. For example, an ALAWON subject line that reads: [ALA-WO] ACT!/APPR indicates that the ALAWON calls for immediate action on an appropriations issue. A subject line that reads: [ALA-WO] INFO/COPY indicates that the ALAWON gives information on a copyright issue, but does not call for immediate action. A list of the abbreviations follows. In May, we will send you a questionnaire asking if you find this new system of subject-line abbreviations useful. We will decide to continue the system or not based on your feedback. Please let us know if there are other subjects you'd like an abbreviation for. List of ALAWON subject-line abbreviations: Action Alerts: ACT! = Immediate Action Needed ALRT = Action Needed, not immediate INFO = Informational issue of ALAWON - no action needed Q? = WO Questionnaire DUE = due dates for grant proposals, dates for events like Leg Day, etc. Issue Alerts: UCIT = UCITA FUND = Funding APPR = Approps LSTA = LSTA ESEA = ESEA FILT = Filtering GVTI = Government Information GRNT = Grants information SCHL = School Libraries LITR = Literacy ERAT = E-Rate DD = Digital Divide GPO = GPO LC = LC COPY = Copyright IF = Intellectual Freedom DB = Database Thank you again for your feedback and invaluable opinions. ****** ALAWON (ISSN 1069-7799) is a free, irregular publication of the American Library Association Washington Office.
