ALAWON: American Library Association Washington Office Newsline Volume 9, Number 58 June 27, 2000 In this issue: Filtering Debate Postponed in Senate Urgent Action Still Needed: Library supporters should call their Senators and urge them to oppose McCain's filtering amendment (No. 3610) to the Labor-HHS-Education appropriations bill (H.R. 4577). The Capitol Switchboard phone number is 202-224-3121. Update: Debate on the Labor-HHS-Education bill (H.R. 4577) was postponed late yesterday before Senator John McCain (R-AZ) was able to offer his amendment for debate and a vote. Several attempts were made in the afternoon to resume consideration of H.R. 4577 in earnest, but there was an apparent lack of critical participants and instead the Senate spent much of the afternoon hearing floor statements as if in Morning Business. This short delay offers a critical, but brief opportunity for library supporters to make additional calls to their Senate offices seeking not only a vote against McCain's filtering amendment, but also seeking Senators who are willing to go to the floor and speak against the amendment. The Senate is expected to resume consideration of H.R. 4577 at 9:30 this morning. McCain's amendment is expected to be considered at 9:45. It is unclear at what time the Senate will schedule a vote on this issue. For more details about the McCain amendment please see ALAWON v.9, n. 56, dated June 23, 2000. ****** ALAWON (ISSN 1069-7799) is a free, irregular publication of the American Library Association Washington Office.
