On Thursday, October 14 from 2:30 to 4 pm ET, DALLAS Telelearning will present Libraries, Copyright, and the Internet, a follow-up to the award-winning Am I A Crook?: Copyright Issues on the Internet satellite event. This program is essential for all academic, school, and public librarians. With Internet access becoming a key service of libraries everywhere, librarians need to know the basics of copyright law. This program will cut through the myths and misinformation about the way fair use and cyberspace law apply in a library setting, restrictions that are truly necessary to avoid the risk of lawsuits, and the liabilities of patrons, librarians, and libraries. Panelists include: Laura N. Gasaway, University of North Carolina, an attorney, a librarian, a professor, and a frequent writer and speaker on copyright issues; Carrie Russell, copyright specialist for ALA's Office for Information Technology Policy; and Trisha L. Davis, with the Association of Research Libraries and The Ohio State University Libraries, who brings to this event her expertise on licensing of electronic products. All ALS live events are available via C-band and Ku-band transmission in both digital and analog. Sorry, the events are not available on DBS. If you plan to downlink the digital signal, please have your technician call PBS Customer Support at 1-800- 257-2578 before the day of air to verify that you have the correct equipment. Washington, D.C. -- Fifty libraries, institutions of higher education, museums, and related organizations across the nation will share $10,405,993 in awards for exemplary leadership in library and information science and model programs of library and museum collaboration. The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the federal cultural agency that lends support to the nation's museums and libraries, made the announcement today. IMLS recognizes the power of libraries to fulfill our nation's information needs. To help them, IMLS established the National Leadership Grant program in 1998. The program supports education and research in library and information science, preservation and digitization of library resources, and library and museum partnerships to increase service to the community. Beverly Sheppard, acting director of IMLS, noted, "Americans today are deluged by information. We are depending increasingly on librarians to act as the nation's information navigators. Libraries and museums are more important now than ever before in this digital age. IMLS is very proud of these forward-thinking institutions." This year's grantees include: a project in Louisiana to teach librarians how to plan renovation projects to accommodate new technologies; a study in Michigan to explore how public libraries bridge the digital divide to assist information "have-nots;" and a project in Colorado to increase digital access to objects from the state's museums and libraries. 1999 RECIPIENTS OF IMLS NATIONAL LEADERSHIP GRANTS EDUCATION AND TRAINING: San Jose State University, San Jose, CA - $234,581 Council on Library and Information Resources, Washington, D.C. - $109,800 College of Micronesia, Kolonia, Phonpei, FSM - $150,042 Southeastern Library Network (SOLINET), Atlanta, GA - $152,034 Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA - $91,291 New England Historic Genealogical Society, Boston, MA - $223,687 University of Minnesota Minneapolis, MN - $66,349 University of Missouri, Columbia, MO - $127,611 Columbus Public Schools, Columbus, NE - $71,960 Kent State University/SLIS, Kent, OH - $123,396 University of the Virgin Islands, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands - $73,000 University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee - $103,449 University of California, Berkeley - $242,825 Regents of the University of California, Riverside, CA - $498,750 Bibliographical Center for Research, Auora, CO - $170,885 University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign, Champaign, IL - $218,872 Eastern Iowa Community College District, Davenport, IA - $249,951 University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY - $215,400 Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD - $250,000 Wayne State University, Detroit, MI - $122,048 Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, MN - $79,224 Research Foundation of SUNY Buffalo, Amherst, NY - $154,324 South Central Regional Library Council, Ithaca, NY - $54,234 University of South Carolina, Spartanburg, Columbia, SC - $249,993 Washington State Library, Olympia, WA - $128,250 PRESERVATION OR DIGITIZATION: University of Denver, Denver, CO - $499,999 University of Miami, Coral Gables, FL - $250,000 State Botanical Garden of Georgia, Athens, GA - $241,223 University of Georgia, Athens, GA - $178,628 Illinois State Library - Springfield, IL - $390,385 Amistad Research Center, New Orleans, LA - $186,003 University of Missouri-Columbia - $75,000 Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY - $158,076 University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill - $216,622 Free Library of Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA - $106,677 Library of the Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia, PA - $151,863 University of Virginia Health Sciences Library, Charlottesville, VA - $248,245 LIBRARY AND MUSEUM COLLABORATIONS: Arizona Department of Libraries, Archives and Public Records, Phoenix, AZ - $317,897 California Digital Library, Oakland, CA - $490,991 Huntington Library and Art Gallery, San Marino, CA - $381,048 Connecticut Historical Society, Hartford, CT - $335,101 Triton College, River Grove, IL - $107,835 Children's Museum of Indianapolis, Indianapolis, IN - $410,931 Kansas State Historical Society, Topeka, KS - $224,076 Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum, St. Leonard, MD - $173,441 Rochester Public Library, Rochester, NY - $279,346 Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA - $343,023 Montshire Museum of Science, Norwich, VT - $98,474 Madison Children's Museum, Madison, WI - $154,741 (For a complete description of grant award projects, see http://www.imls.gov/nlg99list.htm .) ****** ALAWON (ISSN 1069-7799) is a free, irregular publication of the American Library Association Washington Office.
