ALAWON: American Library Association Washington Office Newsline Volume 8, Number 87 September 7, 1999 In this issue: Labor-HHS-Education Funding Update; "National Contact Washington Day for Education Funding" on Friday, September 10 Congress will return from recess on September 8 to a myriad of appropriations issues. The Senate Labor-HHS-Education Subcommittee is scheduled to mark-up their FY2000 funding bill on September 8, and the House Labor-HHS-Education Subcommittee is scheduled to mark-up their funding bill on September 9. However, both mark-ups may slip until the week of September 13 since no progress has been made on the underlying spending cap issue. As reported in the August 20 ALAWON (v8, n83), budgetary caps could result in across-the-board funding cuts of more than 9 percent in the Senate bill and 18 percent in the House bill. ACTION NEEDED: The Committee for Education Funding, a coalition of which ALA is a member that focuses on funding for federal education programs, will hold "National Contact Washington Day for Education Funding" this Friday, September 10. This year's campaign, "Be Smart, Invest in Education," is intended to call legislators' attention to the importance of increased funding for education and related programs for FY2000. The message to Congress is: "Don't cut or freeze education. Make increased federal investment in education the top budget priority."
