Action Needed: Arts, Humanities and Museum Appropriations Action 
in the Senate 

It is expected that the Senate may take up S. 1292, the FY2000 
Interior Appropriations legislation today, July 27.  Sens. Daniel 
Patrick Moynihan (D-NY) and Jack Reed (D-RI) plan to offer an 
amendment to the bill which would increase the budgets of the 
National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the National Endowment for 
the Humanities (NEH) and the museum side of the Institute of 
Museum and Library Services (IMLS).  Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS) may 
also put forward an amendment to increase NEH.  Since activities 
on this legislation may occur over more than one day, and the 
Senate plans to consider the House-passed tax bill later this 
week, the Interior Appropriations bill may take longer than just 
this week to pass.  

ACTION NEEDED:  Library supporters of the arts, humanities and 
museum programs should contact Senators by calling the U.S. 
Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 in support of increased 
appropriations for these agencies.  It is helpful to describe the 
effect of federal dollars in support of programs that take place 
in libraries and the number of individuals reached in the 
community by these programs.
