ALAWON: American Library Association Washington Office Newsline Volume 8, Number 49 May 26, 1999 In this issue: Urgent Action Needed on GPO Appropriations Today ACTION NEEDED: H.R.1905, the Legislative Branch appropriations bill, is scheduled for House floor action tonight. The House legislative appropriations subcommittee and full appropriations committee have voted on appropriations for the Government Printing Office at a lower level than that requested by the President's budget -- $107.7 million. This level of funding will restrict services and not allow any increased services, but a further decrease could have crippling effect. Contact your representative (U.S. Capitol Switchboard phone number: 202-224-4121) and alert them to this detail. Ask them to vote against any amendments which would lower GPO's FY2000 budget. BACKGROUND: For the past two days a number of House members have offered amendments to the Agriculture Appropriations bill which would further cut funds to particular line items. Members of the Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee have explained that their bill is under the budget caps and within the 302b funding allocation of the Subcommittee, but to no avail. It is expected that this tactic will continue on any appropriations bill that goes to the floor. Further cuts in appropriations for the Government Printing Office would impact services to public and depository libraries. ****** ALAWON (ISSN 1069-7799) is a free, irregular publication of the American Library Association Washington Office.
