Ford Government Publications Reform Act of 1998. The Committee approved "the chairman's mark," which amended the introduced version of S. 2288 to meet Administration and industry concerns, but left intact the provisions that would strengthen and enhance public access to government publications. Twelve of the 16 members were present, with Sens. Rick Santorum (R-PA), Trent Lott (R-MS), Don Nickles (R-OK), and Robert Torricelli (D-NJ) absent. Sens. Jesse Helms (R-NC) and Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) noted dissent on the voice vote. Sens. John Warner (R-VA) and Wendell Ford (D-KY), cosponsors of S. 2288, will seek opportunities to speak bring the bill to the Senate floor as soon as a report is filed. Thanks to all for yesterday's intense work to encourage the support of the Senate Rules Committee members. ACTION NEEDED: Please thank members of the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration for their support of S. 2288. (For a list of members, see ALAWON v7, n114; September 28, 1998). However, opposition from some business groups -- including Xerox -- is strong, so the library community must broaden its focus to the rest of the Senate. The Senate's support will be key when S. 2288, the Wendell H. Ford Government Publications Reform Act of 1998, is brought to the Senate floor. Please urge your Senators to cosponsor S. 2288 and vote for its passage. So far Sens. Warner, Ford, Pat Roberts (R-KS), Daniel Inouye (D-HI), Jack Reed (D-RI), and Harry Reid (D-NV) are cosponsors. The U.S. Capitol Switchboard phone number is 202-224-3121. Another way to contact your Senators is through the ALA Washington Office Legislative Action Center at http://congress.nw.dc.us/ala/.
