Hosted by Rep. Rick White (R-WA), a member of the House Commerce Committee and its Telecommunications Subcommittee, the event was also a follow-up to the kick-off on September 15 of the America Links Up, A Kids Online Teach-In campaign. Gardner helped to demonstrate the various ALA and divisional projects that help children and families to have a safe and rewarding experience on the Internet, and was also able to discuss the various blocking and filtering software and why filters are problemmatic in the library setting. A school library media specialist at the Hilton Hershey School in Hershey, PA, Carrie Gardner also made the ALA booth extremely popular by giving away Hershey chocolate bars! This is the second time in as many weeks that ALA members have participated in efforts to educate Congress on technology. On September 9, Pam Berger, a school library media specialist at Byram Hills High School in Armonk, New York assisted OITP and the Washington Office at the Senate Educational Technology Fair. ALA was one of the original participants and few not-for profit groups at the first fair last year and was invited back to demonstrate its ICONnect, KidsConnect, and the recently unveiled FamiliesConnect projects. Berger is chair of the ICONnect national technology initiative of ALA's American Association of School Librarians and has recently authored a book published by ALA Editions, "Internet for Active Learners: Curriculum-Based Strategies for K-12." _________________________________________________________________ ALAWON is a free, irregular publication of the American Library Association Washington Office.
