The program is designed to enhance the quality of library services nationwide and to encourage collaborative efforts between libraries and museums. As this is the first year of this newly revised program under LSTA, ALA encourages strong applications from the library community. The projects must have national impact. Grants will be awarded in September 1998 for exemplary projects in library education and training, library research and demonstration, library preservation or digitization, and model programs of cooperation between libraries and museums. These competitive grants receive 3.75 percent of LSTA appropriations. (The total appropriated for LSTA for FY98 is $146,340,000.) All types of libraries, library schools, library agencies, and library consortia are eligible for the grants. Museums are also eligible if in partnership with libraries. For more information, see the National Leadership Grants guidelines at http://www.imls.fed.us/guidelines/natlead.pdf or call IMLS at 202-606-5227 (TTY for hearing impaired, call 202-606-8636). IMLS also has issued a call for reviewers for the 1998 National Leadership Grants. Qualified field reviewers must be available to review approximately eight proposals during a four week period beginning in May 1998, and must have experience in one or more of the four areas listed above in which awards will be made. Reviewer application forms are available at http://www.imls.fed.us/ols/rvwrcll.html or contact IMLS at the phone numbers listed above. _________________________________________________________________ ALAWON is a free, irregular publication of the American Library Association Washington Office.
