================================================================= ALAWON Volume 6, Number 85 ISSN 1069-7799 September 30, 1997 American Library Association Washington Office Newsline In this issue: (64 lines) SEN. BINGAMAN ENGINEERS ADDITIONAL FUNDS FOR TECHNOLOGY TRAINING CORRECTION TO THE SEPTEMBER 25 AND 29 ALAWONS: $146.3 MILLION _________________________________________________________________ SEN. BINGAMAN ENGINEERS ADDITIONAL FUNDS FOR TECHNOLOGY TRAINING The September 11 Congressional Record (S9195), which includes the text of the Labor-HHS-Education appropriations bill, S. 1061, contains a speech by Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) applauding the Senate for approving funding for "several key education initiatives that have been some of my top priorities in this Congress." Bingaman said that the "Senate approved $30 million to train teachers in the use of technology in the classroom. The funding will be used to implement the Technology for Teachers Act, new legislation that I authored earlier this year." The Technology for Teachers Act, S. 839, was introduced by Sen. Bingaman on June 5. A companion bill, H.R. 2065 was introduced on June 25 in the House by Rep. Constance Morella (R-MD). Neither bill has had committee action as yet. The additional funding for technology training does not appear in the House appropriations bill, H.R. 2265, only in the Senate bill. The ALA Washington Office will continue to follow this issue and bring you updates as they become available. _________________________________________________________________ CORRECTION: In yesterday's ALAWON (v. 6, n. 84, September 29, 1997), the correct total for the Library Services and Technology Act should be $146.3 million, the amount that appears in S. 1061, the Senate passed version of the FY98 Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations bill. In the ALAWON of September 25 (v. 6, n. 83), the first mention of LSTA highest amount is correct at $146.3 million, but the Action Needed lists an incorrect amount. We apologize for the error. _________________________________________________________________ ALAWON is a free, irregular publication of the American Library Association Washington Office.
