ALAWON: American Library Association Washington Office Newsline Volume 15, Number 56 Date: May 22, 2006 In This Issue: Library Funding: House Passed FY 2007 Budget Resolution Late last week the House passed its FY 2007 Budget Resolution. In a complicated series of actions on the floor our position that the House add $7.1 billion in allocations for health, education and social service programs was supported. The Senate had earlier added $7.1 billion for these programs in its FY 2007 Budget Resolution. The important provision in the House Budget Resolution "recognizes the need to increase the president's FY 2007 Labor-HHS request by not less than $7.158 billion." The agreement also stipulates that offsets to pay for the increase in funding will include $1 billion rescinded from Iraq reconstruction funds, not come from cuts to mandatory programs. This is an extremely important action in the process of advocating for an increase in our funding. We now have both the House and Senate on record supporting the additional funding. ****** ALAWON (ISSN 1069-7799) is a free, irregular publication of the American Library Association Washington Office.
