ALAWON: American Library Association Washington Office Newsline Volume 15, Number 52 Date: May 12, 2006 In This Issue: Below you will find a message from the Bill of Rights Defense Committee (BORDC) about a national call-in day, about warrantless wiretapping of what we understand to be domestic-only communications, being organized by BORDC -- with whom we worked closely on amending the USA PATRIOT Act. We are forwarding this to you because we think that some of you may want to participate. The ALA WO is monitoring this issue, but not actively engaged at this juncture. We are not a sponsor of the call-in. If you have questions about the event, please contact . Dear Friends, It's time to register our outrage that the President broke the law by permitting the wiretapping of Americans without warrants! On Wednesday, May 17, join the Bill of Rights Defense Committee in a National Call-in to let your members of Congress know that it is their job to hold the President accountable. We need to tell Congress to protect us from unreasonable searches and seizures and find out how many Americans are being wiretapped, in violation of the law. (Visit our for more information about warrantless wiretapping.) Help us by calling Congress and saying, "Investigate, don't legislate." On Wednesday, May 17, call the Capitol switchboard, 202-224-3121, and ask the operator to connect you (24 hours a day) or call your legislators directly (find their Washington office phone numbers at ). Tell Congress that we want to know how many Americans have had their phone calls or emails eavesdropped on by the NSA without any check. No more secrecy. No more law-breaking. We want to know, and we want to know now. We need your help to make the National Call-In to Congress a widespread outcry against warrantless wiretapping. Will you do these two things to help? 1. Contact your local radio station and ask them to broadcast the Public Service Announcements available at: http://www.bordc.org/newsletter/bordc-act-alert508.php 2. Send the email (below) to all your contacts throughout your community, region and state. We also have a flyer available that you can print and distribute throughout your community: And more resources available: As well as our call-in page: Thanks for all you do!
