ALAWON: American Library Association Washington Office Newsline Volume 15, Number 38 Date: March 14, 2006 In This Issue: Contact your Senators and ask them to please support the Specter/Harkin amendment. This week the full Senate is considering the FY 2007 budget resolution. We urge you to contact your Senator and ask them to support the amendment by Senators Arlen Specter (R-PA) and Tom Harkin (D-IA). This amendment will add $7 billion to education and health programs to prevent the devastating cuts and program eliminations proposed in the FY 2007 budget. Without the Specter/Harkin amendment, the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education Appropriations Subcommittee is likely to go after larger programs to restore the program eliminations proposed in the President's budget. The $10 million increase for LSTA could be eliminated to fund those programs which were cut by the President unless Specter/Harkin passes. The congressional budget resolution is a roadmap that outlines Congress's spending priorities for the year and dictates the amount of spending the Appropriations Committee is allowed to allocate for specific departments and programs like LSTA and Improving Literacy Through School Libraries. ALA strongly supports the Specter/Harkin amendment to the FY 2007 budget resolution. A vote is expected today or tomorrow on the Specter/Harkin amendment. ALA urges you to contact your Senators immediately and ask them support the $7 billion Specter/Harkin amendment. Use ALA's Washington Office Legislative Action Center at to contact your Senator.
