ALAWON: American Library Association Washington Office Newsline Volume 15, Number 25 February 28, 2006 In This Issue: IMPROVING LITERACY THROUGH SCHOOL LIBRARIES GRANT INFORMATION Applications for the FY 2006 grant competition for the Improving Literacy Through School Libraries program are due April 11, 2005. It is important to note that, for the first time, Improving Literacy Through School Libraries applicants must use the U.S. Federal Government's Grants.gov applications system to apply. This is a different electronic application system from the one that was used in the 2005 competition. All applicants most register early, since the registration process on Grants.gov can take from 7 to 10 days. Instructions for registering can be found at www.grants.gov. According to the U.S. Department of Education, it is also necessary to send in your application at least three days before the closing date of the competition, since it can take that long to process the application. If you have expressed interest in applying for the Literacy Through School Libraries program but were told by the U.S. Department of Education that your district is not eligible, you need to let your Representative and both Senators know IMMEDIATELY. Currently, only school districts in which 20 percent of the students served are from families with incomes below the poverty line are eligible to apply. When funds are equal to or more than $100 million, the program will be distributed as formula grants to ALL state departments of education. ****** ALAWON (ISSN 1069-7799) is a free, irregular publication of the American Library Association Washington Office.
