ALAWON: American Library Association Washington Office Newsline Volume 15, Number 24 February 28, 2006 In This Issue: Ask Senators to Vote Against S. 2271 This afternoon the Senate voted to limit debate on S. 2271 and in so doing denied Senator Feingold the opportunity to introduce amendments to the legislation that would have improved reader privacy protections. Feingold's proposals included modest changes to the legislation that would restore privacy protections vital to library users by limiting the scope of the government's power to conduct fishing expeditions of reading records and restoring judicial oversight of PATRIOT Act provisions. The legislation as it stands does not provide adequate protections to library patron privacy. We are asking you again to call both of your Senators today and encourage them to vote against S.2271. ALA supported S. 1389, legislation passed unanimously by the Senate last summer that did improve protections for library patrons. Please encourage your Senators to vote against S. 2271 and support legislation similar to S. 1389. Capitol Switchboard number is: (202) 224-3121. Thank you for your continued support. ****** ALAWON (ISSN 1069-7799) is a free, irregular publication of the American Library Association Washington Office.
