NMRT Board Member Planning Report

1. Office Name: Vice President

2. Office Term (Date: Ex. 2006-2007): 2006-2007

3. How do you plan to help committees address the four NMRT goals? (If it does not apply, put N/A.)

I have developed a list of projects for the next two years that will help address the four NMRT goals.

  1. to structure formal opportunities for involvement and/or training for professional association committee experiences on the national, state, and local levels;

·        I will make appointments to NMRT committees, beginning with the Midwinter-to-Midwinter Committees, starting in late October/early November.

  1. to provide a wide variety of programs to assist, encourage, and educate people who are new to the profession;

·        I am planning an online-based, free leadership program series for NMRT members, which will take place during the 2007-2008 year.

  1. to offer a variety of leadership training and opportunities to help those approaching the end of their NMRT eligibility to make the transition to future positions in the Association and the profession; and

·        Amanda Roberts and I are working on revising the NMRT liaison program.

·        See #5 below for information on the Internships Task Force, which will begin at ALA Midwinter.

  1. to develop and implement ongoing programs for library school students that encourage professional involvement and networking.

·        I am developing plans for an NMRT Speaker's Corps, consisting of NMRT members who are willing to speak (either in-person or virtually) about the benefits of NMRT membership.

4. How do you plan to create a positive committee experience? What type of support do you plan to provide to chairs and committee members, and how often do you plan to provide such support?

I am available via e-mail (nanette.donohue@gmail.com) as well as instant messenger (nanetteamplified on AIM, amplifiedtorock on Yahoo) regularly. I plan to work closely with the Vice Presidential Planning committee, which I supervise, to provide any necessary direction and support. I am also available for any other committee chairs or members who may require assistance.

5. What future directions do you see your office or NMRT needing to take this year or the following year? What kind of strategies do you envision for addressing projects that affect committees outside of your supervision?

I have been in contact with the four directors and the NMRT President regarding projects for the next two years. The directors have already discussed the projects with their committees, and work on some of the projects has already begun.

Much of my work this year is in preparation for next year, and I have already developed a few goals that I would like to address during my presidential term:

  • NMRT needs a new strategic plan, and we need to make sure we keep it up-to-date and make changes as needed. The Vice Presidential Planning committee will be taking the lead on this project.
  • We need to look at marketing and how others outside our membership see us. I am forming an ad hoc Marketing Task Force to research best practices and inform the NMRT Board how to proceed.
  • We need to develop closer relationships with ALA Divisions and Roundtables to ensure that our members have a home within ALA after their time in NMRT has ended. To help with this, I am forming an ad hoc Internships Task Force to develop some guidelines and determine what is needed and how best to proceed.
  • I would like to put together an online leadership institute for NMRT members during my presidential year. The Vice Presidential Planning Committee is helping me with logistics for this project as well. I would like to pursue outside funding to help alleviate the costs for a related preconference on library leadership. I have located speakers for the preconference, which would be open to anyone who is interested in attending, but I would like to keep costs low to ensure that NMRT members are able to secure funding to attend.

I am looking for volunteers for the two ad hoc task forces, so if anyone is interested, please let me know. They are not yet on the committee volunteer form. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, I'd love to hear them. You can e-mail me or message me, whichever you prefer.
