**Committee Charge:

The Orientation Committee plans and conducts orientation programs at Midwinter and Annual Conference. The orientations will include an introduction to ALA, NMRT, the conference, the exhibits, and the host city. The program promotes the ALA conference theme and provides the opportunity for other ALA divisions and round tables to distribute literature and promote their organizations.

**2004 - 2005 Project Description / Goals:

  • Host well-attended orientation programs at the Midwinter Meeting and Annual Conference.

  • Get practical, enthusiastic speakers for the orientation programs.

  • Create positive feelings among orientation attendees about NMRT and about getting involved in NMRT and ALA.
  • Provide orientation attendees with useful information about ALA, NMRT, conference attendance, and the conference city.

**Specific Objectives (numbers, tangible end-products):

  • We will have 100 attendees at the NMRT Orientation program during the Midwinter Meeting.  We will measure the attendance by taking a count at the door and by counting the number of bags given away.

  • We will have 150 attendees at the NMRT Orientation program during the Annual Conference.  We will measure the attendance by taking a count at the door and by counting the number of bags given away.

  • We will measure attendee response to the programs by asking attendees to complete an evaluation form.  Results from these forms will be tallied and presented with our final report.
  • We will publish an article in Footnotes highlighting ways to conference on a budget.

Financial Report Section:

f. Vendor support planned or anticipated for the year (either money or in-kind gifts), list here:

g. Vendor support requested: (From the above list, what, if any, has been requested from the Exhibitor Contact and Relations Committee?)

$500 from EBSCO for bags*

*Exhibitor Contact and Relations Committee has been contacted, but no request form has been sent.

h. Vendor support received: (From the above list, what if any, has been received?)  None

Specific Needs/Support (non-financial):

a. Web Support (help with webpage creation, web form creation, web database, web database, scripting, etc):

No one on the committee is authorized to update the ALA website so we may need help if changes are found to be necessary.

b. On-site conference volunteers:

At both the Midwinter Meeting and the Annual Conference, the Orientation Committee will need approximately five volunteers to stuff bags to be given to program attendees.  Bag stuffing will occur on Friday afternoon.  The Committee will also need two volunteers to greet program attendees at the time of the Orientation Program.  Committee members will serve as on-site volunteers.  At this time we do not anticipate needing additional volunteers.

c. Publicity planned for the committee (posting to other discussion lists, official press release for webpage, etc.):

To promote the NMRT Orientation Program at both the Midwinter Meeting and the Annual Conference, the Committee will send program announcements to the NMRT, NewLib, and LibRef discussion lists.  The Committee will also update its Webpage.  Additionally, the Committee will write an article on how to attend ALA conferences on a limited budget.  This article will be published in an upcoming issue of Footnotes.
