**Type of report being submitted: Committee Planning Report
**Date: Nov. 3, 2003
**Committee Name: Footnotes
Committee
**Supervising Board Member:
Marilyn Ochoa
**Chair, Co-Chairs, Assistant Chairs: Jill Grogg, Editor/Chair; Amanda Roberts,
Assistant Editor/Assistant Chair
**Committee members: Stephanie
DeClue, Terri Holtze, Pennie Howard, Dante Tang, Shannon Tennant
**Committee Charge: Footnotes, a
publication distributed to NMRT members 4 times a year, contains information
about NMRT activities and provides articles relating to the professional
development of librarians. Footnotes is published electronically in August,
November and February and published in paper in May. The chair is appointed for
two years and, along with the committee, is responsible for the editing,
preparation, printing, and distribution of the newsletter. Conference attendance is not required.
**2003 - 2004 Project Description / Goals:
We plan to create the
inaugural year of Footnotes online, implementing the publication schedule of
three online issues (August, November, and February) and one paper issue (May).
We also plan to continue the content improvements previously made by Stacey
Shoup and continued by Jennifer Knievel, including regular columns and feature
stories.
**Specific Objectives (numbers, tangible end-products):
§ A template that conforms
to ALA web site standards will need to be created an adopted so that Footnotes
can reside permanently on ALA servers rather than on member servers. § Jill
Grogg and Amanda Roberts will receive training on the ALA web site at the 2004
Midwinter Meeting. § An attempt should be made to get the Archives committee to
make Footnotes its next project.
Currently, back issues of Footnotes reside with the committee chair,
risking loss as back issues are mailed around every year when the chair
changes. This is also important because
current issues will be going online now, and members will wonder about
accessing older issues online as well.
After the questions that have arisen from the move to the online version
have been addressed, the Archives committee should be consulted about possible
scanning all the old paper versions of Footnotes and making them available
online. § The Handbook will be updated to reflect the changes in Footnotes
production. § The Footnotes Committee is currently investigating a missing box
of Footnotes from the 2002-2003 committee year. The 2002-2003 Editor of Footnotes,
Jennier Knievel, sent a box of approximately 150 copies of Footnotes to ALA
Headquarters in Chicago on behalf of the Booth Committee for the ALA Annual
Conference in Toronto. When the co-chair of the Booth Committee attempted to
pick up the box from Kim Sanders at the Member Relations table, the box was not
there. Jennifer Knievel received a delivery confirmation from FedEx that the
box was received by ALA Headquarters, so the box may be lost at ALA
Headquarters, have gotten lost between ALA Headquarters and the Metro Toronto
Convention Centre, was lost in the mail, or was misplaced at the Metro Toronto
Convention Centre by personnel. Amanda Roberts, Footnotes Assistant Editor, has
contacted Kim Sanders, the ALA Liaison to NMRT, but the box has not been
located. Amanda will continue to pursue the issue until a satisfactory
conclusion has been made.
