HCB 204 B: "How to Get the Media on Libraries' Side" Stephanie Vance, the "Advocacy Guru" and author of "Government by the People: How to Communicate with Congress," will discuss techniques that both new and veteran library advocates can use to speak to the media about federal issues that impact libraries. Vance has over 15 years of experience in Congressional affairs working in Congressional offices and holding positions as Legislative Director and Staff Director. Saturday, 9:00 to 10:00 a.m., Rm. HCB 204 B: "Legislative Issues Affecting Libraries" The ALA Washington Office will discuss the USA PATRIOT Act reauthorization, Google and digitization, and other legislative and policy affecting libraries and library users Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to noon, Rm. HCB 218 "Mass Digitization and Libraries" Clifford Lynch, Executive Director of the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI) will moderate a panel discussion on mass digitization projects, copyright, and libraries. Panelists will discuss implications on libraries of commercial and library-based digitization projects. Panelists include Jonathan Band, Esq., Liz Bishoff, Executive Director, Colorado Digitization Program and Dan Greenstein, University Librarian for Systemwide Library Planning and the California Digital Library. Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to noon, Rm. HCB 213 A "Libraries and Disaster Preparedness: What You Need to Know" FEMA Historic Preservation Specialist Alan Aiches and Kristin Gossell, Director of the Department of Homeland Security's READY Campaign, will lead a workshop on libraries and disaster preparedness. Highlights include discussions by: Robert Lipscombe whose Harrison County, Mississippi, Public Library suffered severe damage from Hurricane Katrina; Tom Clareson of PALINET Library Network; and Mary Chute, Acting Director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services, who will discuss her organization's online tool designed to help libraries prepare for disasters. [2] On-site registration available for 2006 Advocacy Institute CHICAGO - January 10, 2006 - On-site registration will be available at the Advocacy Institute, held in conjunction with the American Library Association's (ALA) 2006 Midwinter Meeting in San Antonio. Registration for the 2006 Advocacy Institute is $25 for ALA members and non-members, and includes lunch. You need to be registered for the Midwinter Meeting to attend this program; however, if you plan to attend, please contact advocacy@ala.org no later than Jan. 17, 2006 so that a lunch can be reserved for you. On-site registration will take place from 9 - 10 a.m. on Friday, January 20, just prior to the Advocacy Institute, and from 10 a.m. to 2:30 pm at the Hilton Palacio del Rio Hotel, in the Del Rey Central and South rooms. Attendees of the Advocacy Institute will learn strategies to successfully advocate for their libraries, including message development, lobbying basics and how to create coalitions with library staff members, trustees and Friends. The program is designed for new advocates or anyone wanting to refresh their skills. Guest speakers include ALA Immediate Past-President Carol A. Brey-Casiano; Sally Reed, Executive Director, FOLUSA and Chair, ALA Public Awareness Committee; and Glenn Miller, Executive Director, Pennsylvania Library Association. It is co-sponsored by the Texas Library Association, New Mexico Library Association, and Arkansas Library Association and coordinated by the Advocacy Institute Task Force of the Public Awareness Committee, The Association for Library Trustees and Advocates (ALTA), The Chapter Relations Committee, The Committee on Legislation and Friends of Libraries USA.
