ALAWON: American Library Association Washington Office Newsline Volume 14, Number 23 March 14, 2005 In This Issue: Sunshine Week & Libraries This week is National Sunshine Week - a week-long series of events that focuses on opening a dialogue about the public's right of access to government. Participating daily and weekly newspapers, magazines, online sites, and radio and television broadcasters will feature editorials, op-eds, editorial cartoons, and news and feature stories that drive public discussion about why open government is important to everyone, not just to journalists. Be sure to check the Sunshine Week site www.sunshineweek.org for information on library activities -- and in case you get a call from your local media about the events. If your library is planning any events that relate to Sunshine Week, please let your local media know - and also contact Amy Stone at American Libraries - astone@ala.org. The Sunshine Week Web site has new information, including editorial cartoons, a public opinion poll about government secrecy and access to information, conducted especially for Sunshine Week by Ipsos-Public Affairs, graphics, and articles. This is a great chance for librarians to tell their stories about the role libraries play in providing access to government information for the public -- most especially if yours is a federal or state depository library. ****** ALAWON (ISSN 1069-7799) is a free, irregular publication of the American Library Association Washington Office.
