Goodrum, assistant professor at the School of Information Studies, Syracuse University and one of the lead researchers for ALA's PATRIOT Study, will discuss the ALA effort to quantify and examine contacts by federal law enforcement agencies in public and academic libraries, and the effect PATRIOT is having on library users. Following Goodrum's presentation, a panel will discuss projected anti-terrorism legislation and how the library community may play a role. Panelists include: Laura Murphy, Washington Director, ACLU; Tom Sussman, Ropes and Gray; and Nancy Talanian, Bill of Rights Defense Committee. Bob Giles of Harvard University's Neiman Foundation also will speak about Sunshine Sunday and Sunshine Week: Your Right to Know, which kicks off March 13, 2005. Sunshine Week is a time when the importance of freedom of information is highlighted through news reports, editorials, columns and editorial cartoons. Libraries will participate by hosting community discussions and other events during the week. 2) Breakout Session 1: Irene Harwarth, Team Leader for the Improving Literacy Through School Libraries Program, Office of Elementary and Secondary Education, U.S. Department of Education 10:30 am - 12:00 pm HCC Room 207 Dr. Harwarth will discuss the Improving Literacy Through School Libraries Program, the only federal program exclusively dedicated to school libraries. Learn more about the important changes to the FY 2005 application process, and ask any questions concerning eligibility and funding. 3) Breakout Session 2: GODORT Update 10:30 am - 12:00 pm HCC Room 306 Brian W. Rossmann, coordinator. Updates from Judy Russell (GPO) and Patrice McDermott (ALA Washington Office. Julie Schwartz (Connecticut State Library) will discuss the OCLC Digital Archive Project to capture state government publications; and Albert Motivans will speak about UNESCO's statistics publishing program. 4) Breakout Session 3: How to Apply Advocacy Institute Skills to Federal Legislation 10:30 am - 12:00 pm HCC Room 309 *Are you informed about federal legislation that impacts libraries but you still have questions or confusion in certain areas?
