ALAWON: American Library Association Washington Office Newsline Volume 13, Number 30 May 10, 2004 In This Issue: Thank You! National Library Legislative Day 2004 a Success! National Library Legislative Day, co-sponsored by the District of Columbia Library Association and the American Library Association, was held this year on May 3 and 4. This year's events brought over 500 librarians and friends of libraries from 49 states to Capitol Hill to advocate on behalf of libraries and library programs. FOLUSA gave its annual public service award this year to both Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI) and Representative Bernie Sanders (I-VT. Both recipients were honored at the Congressional Reception on Tuesday evening. Senator Feingold and Representative Sanders each delivered rousing speeches to the crowd, reinforcing their commitment to fighting against the PATRIOT Act's encroachment on civil liberties. The ALA Washington Office and DCLA express our thanks to the attendees of this year's National Library Legislative Day events. The legislative day events provide an important opportunity for each participant to educate Senators and Representatives about all the terrific programs at your library and on issues that are important to the larger library community. Your Congressional representatives want to know about how libraries and library programs impact the lives of their constituents - your participation in this important event ensures that they do. ****** ALAWON (ISSN 1069-7799) is a free, irregular publication of the American Library Association Washington Office.
