ALAWON: American Library Association Washington Office Newsline Volume 13, Number 4 January 30, 2004 In This Issue: Save the Date: FOI Day and the Madison Award Please mark your calendars for the sixth annual National Freedom of Information Day Conference. It will be held on Tuesday, March 16 at the Freedom Forum's World Center in Arlington, Va. There is no charge for the conference, but participants must register in advance because space is somewhat limited. The conference is sponsored by the First Amendment Center, in cooperation with the American Library Association, and will begin with continental breakfast at 8 a.m. and conclude at 3:30 p.m. The conference will feature an interesting mix of access advocates, government officials, lawyers, librarians, journalists, educators and others who will discuss the latest issues and events in freedom of information. This year's program will include keynote speakers in the morning and at lunch, a panel discussion on the conflict between access and security and one on secrecy as public policy, and presentations by more than 25 experts and policy-makers. The ALA's James Madison Award also will be presented. The program will conclude with a rousing roundtable on such topics as access cases currently before the Supreme Court; the Health Insurance Accountability and Portability Act; electronic court records; and updates on legislation and judicial decisions.
