ALAWON: American Library Association Washington Office Newsline Volume 11, Number 56 July ?, 2002 In This Issue: ACTION NEEDED: SENATE APPROPRIATIONS SUBCOMMITTEE TO MARK-UP NEXT WEEK The Senate Labor, Health and Human Services and Education Appropriations Subcommittee will meet July 16 or 17 to mark up this year's FY2003 appropriations bill, that includes funding for both LSTA and the Improving Literacy Through School Libraries program as well as many other library programs (see the ALA Washington Office web site FY2003 funding chart http://www.ala.org/washoff). Please stress the importance of funding the Library Services and Technology Act at the $350 million level for FY2003. The Improving Literacy Through Libraries program should be funded at least at the $100 million level to ensure that the program will be distributed to all states. Although the Senate allocations are at a higher level than the House, there are large competing programs in the Labor HHS Education bill, such as health research and many large education programs like Title I and the Individuals with Disabilities funding, so it is important that Senators hear from many library supporters. If any of the following are your Senators, please CALL OR FAX THEM IMMEDIATELY....BEFORE July 17. Ask for the Appropriations staff person to deliver your message.
