ALAWON: American Library Association Washington Office Newsline Volume 11, Number 45 May 29, 2002 In This Issue: LITERACY THROUGH SCHOOL LIBRARIES GRANT APPLICATIONS ARE NOW AVAILABLE On May 29, the Department of Education published the grant application for the Improving Literacy Through School Libraries Program (v. 67, No. 103, pp. 37627-37646). The package can be downloaded from the Federal Register Online, via GPO Access (www.access.gpo.gov/su_docs/aces/aces140.html) The section may be accessed through the Table of Contents for volume 67. Eligible Applicants are local educational agencies in which at least 20 percent of the students served by the LEA are from families with incomes below the poverty line. Deadline for Notification of Intent to Apply for Funding: June 28, 2002. Potential applicants should notify the Department of Education by e-mail at literacyandschoollibraries@ed.gov. Put Notice of Intent in the subject line of your e-mail. Applicants should propose programs that address two or more of the four elements listed in the bill: library media specialist collaboration with teachers and students; plan for acquisition of books and other resources to reflect and support collaboration; technology access; and expanded after-school hours.
