ACTION NEEDED: Thank your Senators for their support of public access to electronic government information through depository libraries. Immediately contact Senate conferees on H.R. 4454, Senators Harry Reid (D- Nev.), Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.), Patty Murray (D-Wash.), Robert Byrd (D- W.Va.), Connie Mack (R-Fla.), Conrad Burns (R-Mont.) and Mark Hatfield (R- Ore.), to thank them for their help on restoring the funds needed to implement the GPO Access Act and to ask them to insist on their amendments that will benefit public access to government information. The House conferees have not been named yet, but are likely to include the members of the Legislative Branch Appropriations Subcommittee Representatives Vic Fazio (D-Calif.), James Moran (D-Va.), David Obey (D- Wisc.), John Murtha (D-Pa.), Bob Carr (D-Mich.), Jim Chapman (D-Texas), C.W. Bill Young (R-Fla.), Ron Packard (R-Calif.), and Charles Taylor (R- N.C.), and Joseph McDade (R-Pa.). Contact them immediately and ask them to agree to: * Accept $32.207 million for the Superintendent of Documents Salaries and Expenses for FY95. * Omit the statutory language requiring that the GPO Access Act objectives "shall be carried out through cost savings." * Include "duplicating" in the definition of printing. * Add language to the conference report to say: "The Government Printing Office can distribute paper copies of the U.S. Code to depository libraries out of existing funding." * Include language that any federal officer or employee who publishes a government publication or orders or contracts for an individual printing order is to "comply with all applicable provisions of chapter 19, title 44, United States Code, regarding distribution of Government publications by the Government Printing Office to Federal depository libraries." *************************************************************************** *************************************************************************** ALAWON (ISSN 1069-7799) is an irregular publication of the American Library Association Washington Office, 110 Maryland Avenue, N.E., Washington, DC 20002-5675.
