Dale Kildee (D-MI) is really picking up steam, with 53 Members of Congress now committed to signing on. The letter, addressed to the Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education, requests that the subcommittee provide funding at current year levels for the zeroed-out titles under the Library Services and Construction Act and the Higher Education Act library programs. Obtaining commitments to sign the Kildee letter was the top priority action for participants in Library Legislative Day visits to congressional offices on April 20. Results so far are very good, but we're still missing some Representatives whose offices indicated support. The deadline is Friday, April 30, although Rep. Kildee's office will probably continue to accept new cosigners during the first part of next week as they collect the actual signatures from other offices. The list of those who have committed to signing the letter (and in that order) is shown below. Kildee (D-MI) Strickland (D-OH) Nadler (D-NY) Jacobs (D-IN) Evans (D-IL) Wise (D-WV) Hastings (D-FL) Rahall (D-WV) Morella (R-MD) Kopetski (D-OR) Hochbrueckner (D-NY) Poshard (D-IL) Mfume (D-MD) Gutierrez (D-IL) Lancaster (D-NC) Collins, Cardiss (D-IL) Durbin (D-IL) Byrne (D-VA) Schumer (D-NY) Murphy (D-PA) Owens (D-NY) Volkmer (D-MO) Slaughter (D-NY) Maloney (D-NY) Traficant (D-OH) Gejdenson (D-CT) DeFazio (D-OR) Andrews, Robert (D-NJ) Oberstar (D-MN) Roemer (D-IN) McCloskey (D-IN) Hamilton (D-IN) Bonior (D-MI) Carr (D-MI) Hinchey (D-NY) Reed (D-RI) Stupak (D-MI) Roberts (R-KS) Clay (D-MO) LaFalce (D-NY) Boucher (D-VA) Frank (D-MA) Hall, Ralph (D-TX) Weldon (R-PA) Rush (D-IL) Velazquez (D-NY) Peterson, Collin (D-MN) Petri (R-WI) Pallone (D-NJ) Tauzin (D-LA) Engel (D-NY) Andrews, Michael (D-TX) Bryant (D-TX) ACTION NEEDED: If your Representative isn't on this list, don't hesitate to make a phone call (202-225-3121 will connect you with the House operator) and indicate that you expect to see his or her signature on the Kildee letter. If you've had any indications of support, keep pressing until you are assured your Representative's name is on the list. The message to your Member's staff person: Sign on to Rep. Kildee's letter to Chairman Natcher on library funding by calling Larry Rosenthal in Rep. Kildee's office (225-3611). Reminder: The programs proposed for elimination total $44 million and include LSCA II for construction/renovation of public libraries, LSCA V for acquisition of foreign language materials, LSCA VI for library literacy programs, HEA II-A college library and technology grants, HEA II-B library education and research, HEA II-C for access to major research library resources, and HEA VI-A section 607 acquisition of foreign research materials. Special Reminder to Academic Librarians and Library Educators and Library School Students: The continued existence of any federal support for academic and research libraries, and for library fellowships, training, and research is at stake. It's much harder for a Democratic Congress to oppose a budget request of a Democratic President than it was to ignore a zero budget request from an Administration of the opposing political party. If HEA library programs are lost for a year, they may be lost for good. Our best way to show strong support for continuing these programs is with a longer list of cosigners on the Kildee letter. Make that call today! *************************************************************************** *************************************************************************** ALAWON is an irregular publication of the American Library Association Washington Office, 110 Maryland Avenue, N.E., Washington, DC 20002-5675.
